RIGHTEOUS DOCUMENTS

RIGHTEOUS DOCUMENTS

Although far from being a household name, the name Herman Lee Pettiford already shows signs of significance.

This is because his tireless dedication to social justice, community empowerment, and advocacy for the children of Christ has left quite an indelible mark on the lives of many.

The bare bones of Herman Lee Pettiford’s life can be gleaned from Righteousness in America, a pseudo-autobiographical work that looks at the life of a boy in Baltimore, growing up amidst the chaos and the troubles of the ghetto and becoming a staunch advocate for the people and a devout follower of Christ.

Much of what Herman Lee Pettiford has experienced himself is sprinkled throughout the book–but in a way that allows for readers to also see themselves in his shoes (and how large his shoes are!).

Yet, returning to the real world, Pettiford’s calling into advocacy did not come about of the ether. It is deeply rooted in a profound understanding of the challenges that marginalized communities faced, which he personally witnessed during his youth.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,

for the rights of all who are destitute.

Speak up and judge fairly;

defend the rights of the poor and needy.

– Proverbs 31:8-9

His early experiences with violence and poverty instilled in him the spirit of social responsibility and a yearning to effect positive change. This was the foundation that led him to be active in engaging with his community, working with grassroots initiatives to combat issues ranging from poverty to education to racism and more.

His various involvements provided him with firsthand knowledge of the systemic issues at play and fueled his commitment to long-term solutions.

Throughout his adult life, Herman Lee Pettiford has consistently been a champion of the rights of the marginalized and the ostracized. This is his commitment to the teachings of Christ and the visions of the Saints Peter and Paul.

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

– Galatians 3:26-29

Guided by Christ, he hasn’t ever stopped working diligently for the dismantling of systemic barriers and the fostering of a more equitable society.

His approach to community service is characterized by a deep respect for the individuals he served and a collaborative spirit. Pettiford understands the necessity of cohesion and camaraderie. Thus, he advocates for the importance of empowering communities from within, working alongside residents to identify their needs and develop sustainable solutions–as Christ showed his disciples.

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

– Matthew 4:19

This participatory approach was a hallmark of his early work and continues to inform his advocacy efforts today. Pettiford recognized that true progress requires not just addressing immediate needs but also building the capacity of communities to advocate for themselves.

Herman Lee Pettiford’s career has been marked by a deep and unwavering commitment to creating a more just and equitable society. His work, spanning decades, has touched countless lives and contributed significantly to the advancement of social justice and community empowerment.

Pettiford’s legacy will not just be in the tangible outcomes of his work but also in the inspiration he has provided and continues to provide to others. His dedication to his community and to Christ serves as a powerful example of how one individual, through perseverance, a deep commitment to their values, and a heart for God, can make a profound difference in the lives of others and contribute to building stronger, more inclusive communities.

As he continues his advocacy, Herman Lee Pettiford remains a vital voice for the marginalized and a tireless champion for a more just world.
